Getting around Menorca: rental car, bus or taxi?

It's the first question of almost every trip to Menorca: do I need to rent a car or will the bus do? Here's an honest answer, because it depends on your trip: where you're staying, how many days you have and what you want to see. This is what each option covers, what it doesn't, and how to decide without getting it wrong.

The bus in Menorca: what it covers and what it doesn't

The bus network (TIB) connects the main towns well: Maó, Ciutadella, Alaior, Es Mercadal, Ferreries and the big resorts, with more frequencies in summer. It's cheap and works if your plan is to stay in one area or make the odd trip to the two cities.

The problem: most unspoilt coves, lighthouses and viewpoints have no bus stop. Gems like Cala Pregonda, Cavalleria, Es Grau or the Favàritx lighthouse can't be reached by public transport (or only with tight connections and timetables). Out of season frequencies drop a lot, and the last bus back usually leaves early: forget staying for the sunset at a lighthouse.

The rental car: total freedom (and what it costs)

With a car, the whole of Menorca opens up: you cross the island in under an hour, combine a southern cove in the morning with an inland village in the afternoon and decide each day by the wind — tramontana blowing? Head south; southern sea choppy? Go north. A plan that takes a whole day by bus is two hours by car.

And the price? Split between two or more people, a day's rental usually costs less than two return tickets plus the odd taxi, with no clock-watching. At AblaCars, the price you see is final: no excess, no deposit or card holds and unlimited mileage.

What about taxis?

Perfect for the odd transfer (dinner in Maó, a night out), but expensive as daily transport: cross-island fares add up fast, and getting a taxi at peak time in August can be a challenge.

So, which suits you?

  • The bus is enough if… you're staying in Maó or Ciutadella, coming for a few days, and your plan is mainly the city plus a serviced beach nearby.
  • A car pays off if… you want unspoilt coves and lighthouses, you're staying in a resort, there are two or more of you, you're travelling with kids and beach gear, or you simply don't want to depend on timetables.
  • The smart combo: many customers rent a car only for excursion days and use the bus for the rest. With our beaches and coves guide and the 3, 5 and 7-day itineraries you can plan those days in detail.

Tips if you decide to rent

  • Book in advance in July and August: the island's fleet sells out.
  • Check what the price includes: many cheap deals hide an excess, a blocked deposit or counter surcharges. Compare the real final price.
  • Pick up the car as you land with delivery at Menorca Airport: you save the first transfer and start enjoying from minute one.
  • Choose a local company: nobody will advise you better on routes, parking and coves.

In short: to really see Menorca, a car isn't a luxury — it's the key to the island. Book your rental car in Menorca with a final price and no surprises, and spend your time on the coves, not at bus stops.
