No excess

Car hire with no excess in Menorca

If you have ever rented a car, you know the surprise: you reach the counter and they offer to "upgrade your cover" because your insurance carries an excess — meaning that if there is damage, the first few hundred (or thousand) euros come out of your pocket. At AblaCars we do it the other way round: every rental in Menorca comes with no excess, as standard and with no surcharges.

What is the excess on a car rental?

The excess is the share of any damage the driver pays out of pocket even though the car is insured. The rental company sets the amount, and it can range from a few hundred euros to well over a thousand, depending on the supplier and the type of vehicle.

The amount is not the only problem. Many companies advertise low prices and then, at the counter, push an extra cover that removes the excess — often doubling the final price of the rental. With us there is no such game: zero-excess insurance is already included in the price you see when you book.

Excess, deposit and card hold are not the same thing

These are three different concepts that get confused constantly, partly because they usually show up together at the counter.

ConceptWhat it isWhen you pay it
ExcessThe share of the damage the driver pays despite being insuredOnly if there is damage
Deposit or card holdAn amount blocked on your card as a guaranteeWhen you collect the car, even if nothing happens
Extra coverAdditional insurance sold to remove the excessOn signing, as a surcharge on the price

You can have a car with no deposit but with an excess (no money is blocked, but you pay if there is a bump), or the other way round. At AblaCars you have neither: no excess and no deposit. We cover the deposit side in detail on car rental with no deposit.

What AblaCars' no-excess rental includes

  • Zero-excess cover included: nothing to pay for covered damage, no nasty surprises.
  • No deposit or card hold: we do not block any amount on your card.
  • Final price from the moment you book: what you see is what you pay, no counter extras.
  • Unlimited mileage and recent cars, many of them automatic and hybrid.
  • Delivery wherever suits you: Menorca airport, Mahón or your hotel.
  • Free cancellation up to 72 hours before pick-up.

The specific covered events and exclusions are set out in our rental terms. We would rather you read them before booking than afterwards.

How to spot a hidden excess in an offer

Almost no advert says "with excess" in the headline. It appears further down, in the terms. Before booking anywhere, check these five points:

  1. Look for the word "excess" in the terms, not in the big price. If there is a figure next to it, that figure is yours to pay if there is damage.
  2. Check which insurance the price includes. A "fully comprehensive" policy with an excess is still a policy with an excess.
  3. Check the amount blocked on the card. It usually matches the excess: it is the most reliable clue.
  4. Be wary of cover sold at the counter. If full cover has to be bought when you pick up the car, the price you saw was not the real price.
  5. Find out who provides the cover. Many comparison sites sell third-party policies: if there is damage, you pay the supplier and then claim the money back from the insurer. Covered, yes — but out of your own pocket first.

Why a local company can offer this

We are from Menorca and we look after our fleet closely. We do not depend on counter commissions or last-minute upsells: we prefer a clear price and customers who come back and recommend us. You can see for yourself in our customer reviews.

Compare in peace: when you look at other prices, add what it would cost to remove the excess and unblock the deposit. With AblaCars, that is already the price. Book your no-excess car in Menorca or check our rates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the excess on a car rental?

It is the share of any damage the driver pays out of pocket even though the car is insured. The rental company sets the amount, and it can range from a few hundred euros to well over a thousand depending on the supplier and the vehicle. You only pay it if there is damage.

Is the excess the same as the deposit?

No. The excess is what you pay if there is damage; the deposit or card hold is an amount blocked on your card as a guarantee when you collect the car, even if nothing happens. They get confused because they usually appear together and for the same figure. At AblaCars there is neither.

Does AblaCars charge an excess if the car is damaged?

No. Every rental in Menorca includes zero-excess cover as standard, with no surcharges and no extra cover to buy at the counter. Covered events and exclusions are set out in our rental terms.

Do I have to buy extra insurance when I collect the car?

No. Zero-excess insurance is already included in the price you see when you book. We do not sell cover at the counter and we do not make delivery conditional on buying anything else.

Will you block money on my card at pick-up?

No. We do not ask for a deposit or a card hold, so no amount is blocked on your credit or debit card.

How do I know if a rental offer has a hidden excess?

Look for the word excess in the terms (not in the headline price), check the amount blocked on the card — it usually matches the excess — and see whether full cover has to be bought at pick-up. If it does, the advertised price was not the real one.
