No excess
Car hire with no excess in Menorca
At AblaCars, no-excess cover is included as standard for drivers who meet the general rental conditions. The only exception is drivers aged 19 to 22, for whom an excess and a daily young-driver surcharge apply; the amounts and conditions are explained below.
What is the excess on a car rental?
The excess is the share of any damage the driver pays out of pocket even though the car is insured. The rental company sets the amount, and it can range from a few hundred euros to well over a thousand, depending on the supplier and the type of vehicle.
At AblaCars, no-excess insurance is already included in the price shown when you book, so you know the cover attached to your rental from the outset.
Excess, deposit and card hold are not the same thing
These are three different concepts. Understanding each one helps you know exactly what is included in your rental.
| Concept | What it is | When you pay it |
|---|---|---|
| Excess | The share of the damage the driver pays despite being insured | Only if there is damage |
| Deposit or card hold | An amount blocked on your card as a guarantee | When you collect the car, even if nothing happens |
| Extra cover | Additional insurance sold to remove the excess | On signing, as a surcharge on the price |
You can have a car with no deposit but with an excess (no money is blocked, but you pay if there is a bump), or the other way round. At AblaCars you have neither: no excess and no deposit. We cover the deposit side in detail on car rental with no deposit.
What AblaCars' no-excess rental includes
- Zero-excess cover included: nothing to pay for covered damage, no nasty surprises.
- No deposit or card hold: we do not block any amount on your card.
- Final price from the moment you book: the included items are shown before you confirm.
- Unlimited mileage and recent cars, many of them automatic and hybrid.
- Delivery wherever suits you: Menorca airport, Mahón or your hotel.
- Free cancellation up to 72 hours before pick-up.
The specific covered events and exclusions are set out in our rental terms. We would rather you read them before booking than afterwards.
What to check in no-excess cover
Before booking, check these five points so you know exactly what cover you are taking out:
- Look for the word "excess" in the terms, not in the big price. If there is a figure next to it, that figure is yours to pay if there is damage.
- Check which insurance the price includes. A "fully comprehensive" policy with an excess is still a policy with an excess.
- Check the amount blocked on the card. It usually matches the excess: it is the most reliable clue.
- Confirm when the cover is fixed. It should appear clearly in your booking before pick-up.
- Check who provides the cover and how a damage claim would be handled. This should be clearly explained in the terms.

Book your carFrequently asked questions
What is the excess on a car rental?
It is the share of any damage the driver pays out of pocket even though the car is insured. The rental company sets the amount, and it can range from a few hundred euros to well over a thousand depending on the supplier and the vehicle. You only pay it if there is damage.
Is the excess the same as the deposit?
No. The excess is what you pay if there is damage; the deposit or card hold is an amount blocked on your card as a guarantee when you collect the car, even if nothing happens. They get confused because they usually appear together and for the same figure. At AblaCars there is neither.
Does AblaCars charge an excess if the car is damaged?
No. Every rental in Menorca includes zero-excess cover as standard, with no surcharges and no extra cover to buy at the counter. Covered events and exclusions are set out in our rental terms.
Do I have to buy extra insurance when I collect the car?
No. Zero-excess insurance is already included in the price you see when you book. We do not sell cover at the counter and we do not make delivery conditional on buying anything else.
Will you block money on my card at pick-up?
No. We do not ask for a deposit or a card hold, so no amount is blocked on your credit or debit card.
How do I know if a rental offer has a hidden excess?
Look for the word excess in the terms (not in the headline price), check the amount blocked on the card — it usually matches the excess — and see whether full cover has to be bought at pick-up. If it does, the advertised price was not the real one.
