How to reach and park at Menorca's coves without losing your morning

Menorca's unspoilt coves —Macarella, Turqueta, Mitjana, Pregonda— are the big reason for the trip. But they have a secret nobody tells you until you're there: their car parks are small and fill up first thing in summer. The difference between a perfect day and a frustrating morning lies in knowing how to get there, where to park and at what time. Here's the practical guide, cove by cove, with the real information.

Cala Macarella and Macarelleta: the jewel with restricted access

The island's most famous coves don't allow driving down to the beach in summer: vehicle access is restricted in high season. You have two good options:

  • Park at Cala Galdana and walk the Camí de Cavalls (40-50 minutes, a beautiful pine-shaded path with views; bring water and comfy shoes).
  • Shuttle bus from Ciutadella in season, which drops you near the cove.

Our tip: get up early, park at Galdana before 9:30 and do the walk in the cool morning. You'll reach Macarella while it still looks like an empty postcard.

Cala en Turqueta: the car park that vanishes

Turqueta does have its own free car park, but it's small and gated: when it's full, it closes, and in July and August that can happen between 8:30 and 9:30 in the morning. From the car park it's an easy 10-15 minute walk to the sand. If you arrive and it's closed, don't waste the morning waiting: 15 minutes away by car there are equally beautiful alternatives.

Cala Mitjana and Mitjaneta: the smart alternative

Next to the Cala Galdana road there's a free car park from which you reach Cala Mitjana in about 15 minutes on foot. It usually holds out a bit longer than Turqueta, and the cove —with its cliffs and turquoise water— gives nothing away to its neighbours. Mitjaneta, its little sister, is a short scramble away.

Cala Pregonda: the north you earn on foot

The jewel of the north is conquered with a 30-40 minute walk from the Binimel·là car park along the Camí de Cavalls. The reddish, almost Martian landscape makes the walk part of the experience. Bring water, a cap and closed shoes: there are no services at the cove. In return, you'll find one of Menorca's most spectacular views. More northern ideas in our north vs south guide.

The easy beaches: parking without stress

Not everything has to be early alarms and hikes. These beaches have ample parking and direct access, perfect with kids or for lazy days:

  • Cala Galdana: large car park, flat promenade and full services.
  • Son Bou: the island's longest beach, with ample parking.
  • Arenal d'en Castell and Son Parc: calm, convenient northern bays.
  • Punta Prima: south of Mahón, with parking and services.

The 6 tricks that make the difference

  • Go early or late: before 9:30 or after 17:00. In the late afternoon car parks empty out and the light is the day's most beautiful.
  • Always have a plan B: if a car park is closed, by car you have another cove 15-20 minutes away. That flexibility is impossible by bus.
  • Respect the barriers and don't park on verges: besides fines, you block emergency vehicles.
  • Don't leave belongings in sight in the car at cove car parks.
  • Water, cap and footwear: unspoilt coves have no beach bar.
  • Combine coves: an unspoilt one early morning and an easy one in the afternoon is the perfect formula.

The key to it all: moving at your own pace

As you can see, conquering Menorca's coves is a game of timing and flexibility: arriving early, changing plans if a car park is full, stretching the afternoon at your favourite cove. That's only possible with your own car. If you're flying in, remember we offer car hire at Menorca Airport with delivery at Parking P1, always at a closed final price, no excess or deposit and unlimited mileage to hop from cove to cove. Frequently asked questions

What time do you need to arrive to park at Macarella or Turqueta?

In July and August, before 9:00-9:30 in the morning. Turqueta's car park closes its barrier when full, and access to Macarella is restricted in summer: the usual plan is to park at Cala Galdana and walk the Camí de Cavalls, or take the shuttle bus from Ciutadella.

Are the car parks at Menorca's coves free?

Most car parks at unspoilt coves (Turqueta, Mitjana, Binimel·là) are free but small and fill up early in summer. Easy-access beaches like Cala Galdana, Son Bou or Arenal d'en Castell have larger car parks.

Which coves have easy access by car?

Cala Galdana, Son Bou, Arenal d'en Castell, Son Parc and Punta Prima have ample parking and direct access, ideal for families. The unspoilt coves (Macarella, Turqueta, Mitjana, Pregonda) require an early start and some walking.

Is it worth hiring a car to see Menorca's coves?

Yes, it's the most practical way: buses don't reach most unspoilt coves and shuttles only run in season with limited timetables. With a car you can start early, switch coves if a car park is full and stay until sunset.
