Parking in Menorca & the Maó access cameras (without getting a fine)

Driving is the best way to discover Menorca, but there are two things worth knowing before you head into the town centres: the residents-only access cameras in Maó and how the parking zones work (free, blue and orange). This guide explains it clearly so you enjoy the trip without a nasty surprise in the post weeks later.

Maó access cameras: residents only

Maó council has created a Calmed Traffic Area in the historic centre: a zone designed to make the centre friendlier for people and local businesses, where only authorised vehicles may drive in (residents of the streets concerned, local businesses and certain permits).

Control is automatic. There are three number-plate cameras at these three entry points:

  • Plaça de s'Esplanada (the big central square).
  • Carrer de Sant Jordi.
  • Carrer de sa Lluna.

If your car isn't on the authorised list and you cross one of those points, the camera records it and a fine follows. The penalty period has been in force since 29 February 2024, so the cameras really do fine. In fact, the island's own car-hire firms have warned that fines are constant, mostly among tourists who enter by mistake without noticing the sign.

The key to avoiding a fine: as you approach central Maó you'll see restricted-access signs (the red "no entry" circle with notices). Don't drive into Esplanada, Sant Jordi or Sa Lluna with your rental car. Leave it in one of the car parks below and walk into the centre: it's five minutes away and it's the prettiest part.

Parking in Maó: free, blue zone and orange zone

Maó has three types of parking:

  • Blue zone (rotation): paid, maximum 2 hours. This covers the most central streets.
  • Orange zone: also paid but for longer stays, up to 8 hours. Ideal if you're spending the day.
  • White zone (free): no kerb markings. The further from the centre, the easier to find.

Blue-zone hours in summer (1 June – 30 September): Monday to Friday 9:00–14:00 and 17:30–20:30 (in the port until 22:30); Saturdays 9:00–14:00. Outside those hours, and on Sundays, it's free — always respecting driveways and loading bays. Pay at the machine (no change given) or easily from your phone with the official app (Telpark).

Local tip: the underground car park at s'Esplanada and the Es Freginal car park are the most convenient way to leave the car and walk down to the port. Note: you may only drive into s'Esplanada if you're heading to the underground car park — the cameras allow that.

Parking in Ciutadella

Ciutadella works similarly, with a paid blue zone (two tariffs, blue ticket and red ticket depending on the area, maximum 2 hours) and a residents-only green zone (don't park there with a rental car). In summer the hours are Monday to Friday 9:30–13:30 and 18:00–21:00, plus Saturday mornings; Sundays and holidays are free.

Important: the Es Born square is pedestrianised and access-restricted, so forget parking there. The practical choice is to leave the car in the free peripheral car parks (Sa Coma, the port area via Ciutat de l'Alguer, or the Vía Perimetral) and walk in. They're 5–10 minutes away and save you circling and fines.

Parking in Alaior and the villages

Alaior has a few paid blue-zone streets in the centre, but it's small and free parking is easy around the edge. In the other villages (Es Mercadal, Ferreries, Sant Lluís, Es Castell, Es Migjorn…) parking is usually free; the practical exception is high season and local fiestas, when it's best to arrive early or leave the car on the outskirts. At the coves and beaches, many car parks are free gravel lots but fill up early: in July and August, the earlier the better.

Heads-up: works on the ME-1 main road (summer 2026)

This summer there are works on the ME-1 main road between Maó and Alaior (Talatí area), the island's main route. Work doesn't stop for the season, so expect temporary diversions, single-lane stretches and possible tailbacks, especially at summer peak times. Our advice: leave with time to spare if you're heading to the airport or crossing the island, slow down through the works and be patient. It's signposted, but hitting the queue unexpectedly could cost you a flight.

Quick summary for stress-free driving in Menorca

  • In Maó: don't drive into Esplanada, Sant Jordi or Sa Lluna (residents' cameras). Park at s'Esplanada, Es Freginal or the blue/orange zone.
  • In Ciutadella: park on the outskirts (Sa Coma, port, Vía Perimetral) and avoid Es Born and the green zone.
  • In the villages and coves: mostly free, but arrive early in summer.
  • ME-1 Maó–Alaior: works all summer, leave early.

Above all, enjoy it: with a little planning, driving around Menorca is pure freedom. At AblaCars we hand over the car at the airport as soon as you land, with no-excess insurance and no deposit. To plan your routes, see the beaches and coves guide and the 3, 5 and 7-day itineraries.

Blue-zone hours and tariffs and access rules may change; please confirm the details on the relevant council website (Maó, Ciutadella or Alaior) before your trip. Last updated: July 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive into the Esplanada in Maó?

No, unless you're an authorised resident or heading to the underground car park at s'Esplanada. Three cameras control access at Plaça de s'Esplanada, Carrer de Sant Jordi and Carrer de sa Lluna, and have fined unauthorised vehicles since 29 February 2024.

Where can I park for free in Maó?

Outside blue-zone hours (and on Sundays) marked parking is free. The further from the centre, the easier to find free white-zone spaces. You can also use the Es Freginal car park or the underground one at s'Esplanada.

What are the blue-zone hours in Maó in summer?

From 1 June to 30 September the blue zone is paid Monday to Friday 9:00–14:00 and 17:30–20:30 (in the port until 22:30) and Saturdays 9:00–14:00. Outside those hours and on Sundays it's free.

Are there roadworks in Menorca this summer?

Yes. During summer 2026 there are works on the ME-1 main road between Maó and Alaior, with diversions and possible tailbacks. Allow extra time, especially heading to the airport.
